Italy, 1561–1607

Italian composer and organist (c. 1545-1607), court musician at Ferrara and director of the concerto delle donne, the virtuoso women's ensemble whose ornamented singing he wrote down. He was the teacher of Frescobaldi and the model closest to hand for Gesualdo.
