What is MusicRoots?
MusicRoots is a reference database of documented influence between musicians. Each entry records that one artist influenced another and cites the published source that says so: an interview, a memoir, an encyclopedia, a documentary.
Nothing here is inferred from how two artists sound. If no source states the connection, the connection is not in the database.
The database currently holds 1222 artists, 3118 connections between them, and 3195 citations supporting those connections.
What the site answers
Every page is built around four questions:
- Who influenced a given artist?
- Which artists did that artist influence in turn?
- How does a line of influence run from one artist to another, through the artists in between?
- What is the documented evidence for a particular connection?
An artist page answers the first two directly and gives the stated reason for each connection. The influence tree walks the same data outward from any starting point, so a chain can be followed across generations.
How to read a connection
A connection is written A → B and means A influenced B. Following the arrows forward leads to heirs; following them backwards leads to roots.
Jimi Hendrix → Motörhead → Metallica records that Hendrix influenced Motörhead and that Motörhead influenced Metallica. It does not claim Hendrix influenced Metallica directly: that would be a separate connection, needing its own source.
What counts as evidence
A connection is published only once a source states it. The sources used are:
- interviews with the musicians themselves
- autobiographies and memoirs
- music encyclopedias and reference works
- documentaries
- official publications and other authoritative accounts
Each connection carries a confidence level, high or medium, which reflects whose account it rests on rather than how many accounts there are. An artist's own statement of a debt is the strongest evidence this database can hold, and it reaches high on its own. Third-party accounts count for less, and two of them are needed to reach the same level.
What MusicRoots is not
The database records influence that someone has stated, not resemblance a listener might hear. It is not a recommendation engine. Connections are not derived from audio similarity, listening data, genre tags or chart position, and two artists who sound alike are not linked here unless a source links them.
A connection is also not a judgement. It does not mean one artist copied another, and it says nothing about which of them is the better musician.
Where the material comes from
Artist descriptions are written for this site. Images and encyclopedia links come from public sources under their own terms, set out on the Credits & licensing page. What little visitor data the site processes is described on the Privacy page.
Corrections and additions
Anyone can suggest an artist or report an error. No registration is required and every submission is read by hand before it appears. A connection that turns out to have no source behind it is removed rather than kept.
