Cipriano de Rore

Belgium, 1542–1565

Franco-Flemish composer (1515/16-1565) who spent his career in Italy, at Ferrara and briefly at San Marco in Venice. His chromatic, text-driven madrigals broke the smooth Renaissance surface in the service of the words, and the next century read him as the man who began the change.
