The father of hip-hop — the Jamaican-born Bronx DJ whose 1973 'Merry-Go-Round' technique of extending the funk break across two turntables gave birth to the whole culture. He fused the Jamaican sound-system and toasting tradition of his Kingston childhood with the hard funk of James Brown.
