Vincent d'Indy
France, 1870–1931
French composer (1851-1931), pupil of Cesar Franck and co-founder of the Schola Cantorum de Paris in 1894. He mattered at least as much as a teacher: Satie, Roussel, Honegger and Cole Porter all passed through his counterpoint and orchestration classes.

Who influenced Vincent d'Indy?
- César Franck — D'Indy studied privately with Franck from 1872, followed him into the Conservatoire organ class, and on Franck's death became the keeper of his method — which is what the Schola Cantorum was built to teach.
- Richard Wagner — D'Indy heard the first Ring at Bayreuth in 1876 and came back a Wagnerian for life — the chromatic harmony he then taught to a generation of French composers.
Which artists did Vincent d'Indy influence?
- Cole Porter — Porter studied orchestration and counterpoint with d'Indy at the Schola Cantorum — the formal training behind songs that keep modulating where a popular song would not.
