American singer (1942-1998, Virginia Wynette Pugh). A hairdresser in Alabama until she was twenty-four, she sang the breaking catch in her voice into 'Stand By Your Man' and 'D-I-V-O-R-C-E' and became the definitive woman's voice of Nashville. Her marriage to George Jones produced duets and a great deal of damage.
