Los Angeles hard rock band fronted by John Kay, formed in 1967 out of the blues group Sparrow. Their 1968 'Born to Be Wild' — which put the phrase 'heavy metal thunder' on record — and 'Magic Carpet Ride' fused blues, garage and psychedelia into an early template for hard rock and metal.
