Soviet and Russian composer and pianist, born in Kyiv and raised in Leningrad. He wrote for more than a hundred films, played with a pillowcase over his head, and refused almost every institution that offered to take him in — including Shostakovich, who wanted him in his class. Most of what he played was never written down.
