Kavinsky
France, 2005–2026
French producer (1975-2026, Vincent Belorgey) who built his whole output around one character: a driver killed in a 1986 crash who comes back as a car. Nightcall, produced with Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, opened Drive (2011) and made 1980s synth pastiche a living genre again; the album OutRun followed in 2013.
MusicRoots documents 3 artists who influenced Kavinsky and 0 artists Kavinsky influenced in turn. Every connection cites a published source.
Who influenced Kavinsky?
- John Carpenter — Kavinsky's whole sound is built on Carpenter's film scores, and the OutRun album took Carpenter's Christine — the car that is alive — as part of its concept.
- Giorgio Moroder — Moroder's soundtrack work is the direct model for OutRun: the track 'Protovision' quotes the American Gigolo score.
- Tangerine Dream — Tangerine Dream's Thief soundtrack is one of the records OutRun works from — the sequenced, nocturnal synth score for a man behind a wheel.
