Jacques Arcadelt

Belgium, 1527–1568

Franco-Flemish composer (1507-1568) who went south as a young man and, with Verdelot and Festa, set the pattern of the Italian madrigal; his first book of madrigals (1539) was the most reprinted collection of the era. From 1539 he sang in the papal chapel in Rome, where the next generation studied his dense counterpoint.
