Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs, who met in Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys in 1945 and left together three years later. Scruggs's three-finger roll is the reason a banjo sounds the way it does in bluegrass; 'Foggy Mountain Breakdown' and the Beverly Hillbillies theme carried it to people who had never heard the word.
