San Francisco band formed in 1979, fronted from 1988 by Mike Patton. Genre-hopping between metal, funk, hip-hop and lounge, The Real Thing ('Epic') and Angel Dust made them pioneers whose fusion paved the way for nu-metal and alt-metal.
