American singer (1914-1984) who wrote to Jimmie Rodgers's widow as an unknown asking for a signed photograph, and ended up playing Rodgers's own guitar for forty years. 'Walking the Floor Over You' (1941) put an electric guitar in a country record to cut through a dance-hall crowd, and honky-tonk followed from it.
