Dizzy Gillespie

USA, 1937–1993

American trumpeter, composer and bandleader (1917-1993). With Charlie Parker he built bebop out of the swing bands, then brought Cuban rhythm into jazz with Chano Pozo on 'Manteca'. The bent horn and the cheeks were a gift to caricature; the harmonic thinking behind them taught two generations.
