Claude Thornhill
USA, 1931–1965
American pianist and bandleader (1908-1965), conservatory-trained at Cincinnati and Curtis. His orchestra played ballads at a near-standstill with vibrato stripped out of the horns, a sound one writer called a cloud hanging in the air, and cool jazz came out of it.
