American drummer and bandleader (1919-1990). The Jazz Messengers, which he led for thirty-five years, worked as a school: he hired young players, made them write and arrange, and turned them out as leaders - Horace Silver, Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, Keith Jarrett and Wynton Marsalis all came through it. His press roll behind a soloist is one of the loudest and most recognisable sounds in jazz.
